The term fine particles or particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) refers to dangerous particles of air pollutants that are less than 2.5 microns in diameter. At 1/20th the width of a human hair, they lodge deep in the lung tissue and are linked to many diseases, from cancer to asthma, and even autism.
Where does PM2.5 come from?
PM2.5 comes in many shapes and sizes and can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals. It comes primarily from combustion, such as transportation, electricity generation, waste incineration (in open space), and manufacturing industry. As for the severe air pollution in Bangkok over the past few days, it is mainly due to transportation, no doubt (imagine how many cars are on the road these days!).
The danger that comes with dust… and how to keep yourself (and your loved ones) healthy
Overexposure to PM2.5 can lead to variety of health problems, with dry throat, sore nasal, sore throat, coughing and sneezing being the initial symptoms. Due to its size, once entering the lungs and lower respiratory tract, the residues will remain in the lung tissue. These residues can then enter the bloodstream to other organs, leading to other chronic diseases such as allergies, acute respiratory infections, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ischemic heart disease, circulatory system disease and lung cancer.
Protecting is always better than medicating...so make sure to wear N95 masks every time you leave the building, drink plenty of water to reduce the level of toxins in the body and make sure to take a shower and wash your hair once you return home from outside. Closing doors and windows and installing an air filtration system at home can keep the dust at a minimal. And most importantly, make sure to consume healthy, nutritious fruits and vegetables, plus supplements that are brimming with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to help your body remove the toxic substances.
